Fantasia, Coast Women Talk to Their Sisters

2009 marks the second year the Saving Our Sisters Summit has brought lessons about womanhood, waiting, and what to do with your life to hundreds of teenage girls in South Mississippi.

The goal of the summit, sponsored by radion station WJZD, is to curb the rate of pregnancies and to help teen girls make positive and productive choices about themselves and their futures. The event also provided practical instruction about social graces, decision-making, peer pressure and teen stresses.

This year, Fantasia Burrino, second season winner of American Idol, was the keynote speaker. She related her own experiences that included a teen pregnancy and the hardships she faced after rebelling against parental rules and family advice not to grow up too soon.

Some 3,000 teenage girls and their mothers attended the summit, according to WLOX reporter Elise Roberts, who gave her own thoughts about the event and her community work to help young girls.
